Updating North American Cities

Version 1.6 is starting to be released from the reviewers at Apple.  The first batch of cities (New York, Boston, Miami and Houston) came out today with more on the way.  There are a number of new features:

  • Transit now renders better, especially in the Transit view mode.
  • There is a new Place Directory that allow you to jump to any known city/suburb/town or any transpiration location (Airport, Ferry Terminal, Train Station, Subway stop).
  • Search is more forgiving and more powerful – you can search for keywords in the metadata (find me all the sushi restaurants or Parking.
  • Highway exits are marked and highways have bubbles labeling their number.

Thanks for the feedback we have received – it helps us prioritize our next features.

Sorry – our database doesn’t include street addresses

We are always happy to have feedback – we have lots of features still to implement and your comments help us schedule new features.  Some recent comments:

My problem was inability to find an address in Chicago. Can I NOT locate street addresses with street numbers? No matter how I put it in (505 North Lake Shore Drive) nothing came up.

- Brent

Why won’t this find my street address?

- Clifton

Our products do not have street addresses and sadly you cannot search for them.  All of our products use data provided by the OpenStreetMap (a great project – check it out!).  The OpenStreetMap project has very little to no street address database for cities (with a few exceptions – Toronto and Paris for instance).  None of the “offline” map tools available for the iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch will include a street address search.

Sorry!

How to return home

We had a support request over e-mail today that I wanted to share with everyone. The question was:

I just purchased 20mb WAS but told it to allow my location.  Now I am stuck in a map for my hometown and NOT Washington DC which is why I bought the app.  How do I get the Washington DC map?

Good question!  If you are online and press the GPS button, the map will try to download a map for where you are currently standing.  So how do you get back?  Turn off the GPS on your iPad/iPhone and then hit the GPS button again.  The procedure in more detail:

  1. Quit the map application
  2. Go to Settings -> Wifi -> turn wifi off.  (if you have a 3G iPad or iPhone, put it in airplane mode).
  3. Launch map application.
  4. Press GPS button in the lower left hand corner.
  5. You should get a dialog box that says “GPS Position – The GPS hardware cannot find your location …”.  Press the “Move to Start” button.
  6. Quit the map application
  7. Go back to setting and turn Wifi on (or airplane mode off).

There are other ways to do the same thing, but this is the easiest.
